Spinal Care and Structural Wellness
Lifetime Wellness Chiropractic Care in Edmonton
Building Health for a Lifetime Through Nervous System Function, Structural Integrity, and Wellness Care
Health Is Not Something You Fix. It Is Something You Build.
Many people enter a chiropractic office because something hurts.
Their neck hurts.
Their back hurts.
They have headaches.
Their body is asking for attention.
While there is nothing wrong with seeking help when symptoms appear, symptoms are often the final stage of a process that has been developing for months, years, or even decades.
At One Village Family Chiropractic, Dr. Wendy Coburn believes health is not simply about feeling better.
Health is about functioning better.
It is about maintaining a nervous system, spine, and body that can adapt to the demands of life throughout every age and stage.
Just as we brush our teeth before they hurt, exercise before we lose strength, and eat nutritious foods before we become deficient, chiropractic care can become part of a proactive strategy to support lifelong health and function.
This is what wellness care is about.
Not waiting for crisis.
Not chasing symptoms.
But intentionally building health over time.
Why Lifetime Wellness Matters
The average person spends decades sitting, driving, looking down at screens, working at computers, carrying children, dealing with stress, sleeping poorly, and adapting to the physical and emotional demands of life.
The body is incredibly resilient.
But eventually adaptation has limits.
Many of the structural and neurological patterns we see in adults did not begin last month.
They often began years earlier.
Small compensations become larger compensations.
Minor restrictions become chronic restrictions.
Stress accumulates.
Posture changes.
Movement patterns adapt.
The nervous system learns compensation patterns.
Over time these patterns can influence how efficiently the body functions.
Wellness chiropractic focuses on helping people maintain healthy function long before major problems develop.
Your Nervous System Controls Everything
The nervous system is the master communication system of the body.
It coordinates:
Movement
Balance
Breathing
Digestion
Hormonal communication
Sleep
Recovery
Immune responses
Adaptation to stress
Every second of every day your brain is gathering information from your body and environment.
It then uses that information to make millions of adjustments designed to keep you functioning and adapting.
When communication between the brain and body becomes less efficient, the body often begins to compensate.
Sometimes those compensations show up as symptoms.
Sometimes they show up as reduced performance, poor posture, tension, fatigue, sleep challenges, or decreased resilience.
At One Village Family Chiropractic, our goal is to support healthy nervous system function throughout life.
What Is Structural Chiropractic Care?
Structure influences function.
How your body is built affects how your body works.
When we discuss structural chiropractic care, we are talking about the alignment, balance, movement, and integrity of the spine and supporting structures.
Your spine protects your nervous system.
Your posture influences breathing.
Your movement patterns influence joint health.
Your structural balance influences energy expenditure.
When structure becomes distorted, the body often compensates.
Those compensations may become deeply ingrained over years.
Structural chiropractic care focuses on improving spinal function, movement quality, postural balance, and nervous system communication.
Studying Chiropractic Biophysics
One area of chiropractic that has influenced our understanding of structural health is Chiropractic BioPhysics.
Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) is a research-based approach that studies the relationship between spinal alignment, posture, biomechanics, and nervous system function.
The central premise is simple:
The way the spine is positioned influences how forces are distributed throughout the body.
Over time, abnormal loading patterns may contribute to accelerated stress and degeneration.
Research within Chiropractic Biophysics has explored:
Cervical curve restoration
Forward head posture
Structural spinal balance
Biomechanics
Long-term spinal health
Postural correction strategies
While Dr. Wendy Coburn does not practice CBP as a primary technique, studying Chiropractic Biophysics has reinforced an important principle:
Structure matters.
Posture matters.
Movement matters.
Alignment matters.
The body functions best when its design is respected.
This understanding complements Dr. Coburn’s nervous-system-centered approach and helps explain why long-term structural habits influence overall health.
Why Posture Matters
Modern life places extraordinary stress on posture.
Many people spend:
8–12 hours sitting daily
Hours looking at phones
Long periods driving
Extended time at computers
Over time these habits often contribute to:
Forward head posture
Rounded shoulders
Thoracic collapse
Reduced spinal movement
Altered breathing patterns
These patterns do not occur overnight.
They develop gradually.
Unfortunately, because they develop slowly, many people assume they are normal.
They are common.
But common and normal are not always the same thing.
Wellness chiropractic care focuses on identifying these patterns early and helping people move toward healthier structural habits.
Wellness Is More Than Adjustments
One of the greatest misconceptions about chiropractic is that health comes from the adjustment alone.
The adjustment is important.
But it is only one part of the equation.
At One Village Family Chiropractic, wellness care also includes conversations about:
Movement
The body was designed to move.
Movement improves circulation, balance, strength, coordination, and neurological function.
Nutrition
Cells require nutrients to function properly.
Protein, healthy fats, hydration, vitamins, and minerals all influence health outcomes.
Sleep
The brain and body recover during sleep.
Quality sleep supports healing, memory, hormone regulation, and nervous system health.
Stress Adaptation
Physical, emotional, and chemical stress influence how the nervous system functions.
Learning to regulate stress improves resilience and adaptability.
Mindset
The stories we tell ourselves influence our physiology.
Optimism, gratitude, purpose, and connection all impact health.
The Wellness Continuum
Many patients move through several stages of care.
Phase One: Recovery and Regulation
The initial goal is improving nervous system function and reducing interference.
Phase Two: Stabilization
Once improvement occurs, the focus shifts toward maintaining gains and supporting adaptation.
Phase Three: Wellness
The goal becomes sustaining function, preventing regression, and optimizing health over time.
This phase often includes periodic chiropractic assessments and adjustments alongside healthy lifestyle habits.
Caring for Your Spine Throughout Life
Children require spinal health.
Teenagers require spinal health.
Athletes require spinal health.
Parents require spinal health.
Seniors require spinal health.
The need for a healthy nervous system does not disappear because symptoms improve.
In fact, maintaining health often becomes easier when wellness habits are established before problems arise.
The spine and nervous system are lifelong assets.
The better they function, the greater your capacity to live the life you desire.

Health Is a Lifetime Journey
You do not go to the gym once and expect lifelong fitness.
You do not eat one healthy meal and expect lifelong nutrition.
You do not brush your teeth once and expect lifelong dental health.
Health is built through consistency.
The same principle applies to chiropractic care.
At One Village Family Chiropractic, we believe wellness is not a destination.
It is a lifelong journey of movement, adaptation, growth, learning, and intentional choices.
Because chiropractic is not simply about helping you feel better.
It is about helping you function better.
And when you function better, you have the opportunity to live better, move better, think better, adapt better, and enjoy life more fully.
Structural wellness concerns the resolving of structural or spinal imbalances in support of proper biomechanics to allow for proper function. Whether suffering from a new injury or chronic pain, the practice and science of detecting and correcting vertebral subluxations (misalignments of the bones in the spine, skull or pelvis) through regular chiropractic care is proven effective because it provides relief while allowing for the preservation of smooth, pain-free joint mobility and brain body communication. Positive postural changes also make a significant difference in overall function, health and wellness.
While pain is the least common symptom in realizing you have a problem, subluxation can lead to far more health challenges decreasing optimal function and healing. It alters nerve function within the spinal cord and within the nerve roots exiting the spine, which connect the brain to every cell, organ and tissue in the body. Subluxation is commonly the underlying cause of back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, disc herniations, muscle spasms and tension, swelling, and abnormal sensations of numbness or tingling. Left uncorrected for a long period of time, subluxation causes spinal degeneration in the bones, joints, discs, and surrounding soft tissues in the spine, (aka Arthritis, osteoarthritis). (Wolf’s Law and Davis’ Law).
Research shows that chiropractic is the best evidence-based, natural health-care solution for these problems, and for both short-term and long-term patient satisfaction. Sitting and standing with proper postural alignment allows you to live and work more efficiently and with less fatigue and strain on your body’s muscles and spine.
Specific chiropractic adjustments, based on a careful examination and analysis of the spine, result in a normalizing and calming effect in your spinal joints, nerve receptors and spinal cord and body.
The health of the spine is directly related to the nervous system, which facilitates the health, healing and function of every activity in the body. Chiropractic care results in a relaxation response and muscle activation within those muscles surrounding the subluxation that may be in spasm. Pain dissipates or disappears because movement is restored, prompting negative pain signals to the brain from improperly moving spinal segments to become inactive. In addition, proper movement of the spine actually assists in the body to decrease fight-or-flight stress responses in the brain. And less stress is directly related to better health. Stress being the number one cause of all disease.
With a decrease of stress responses throughout the body, brain, nervous system, and the relief of pressure from the spinal cord, sweeping improvements in overall health are often experienced within just a few weeks to months. Symptoms such as numbness and tingling, muscle weakness and other abnormalities often improve and begin to normalize as the body itself heals and functions better like it is designed to.
Pain relief, however, is not the primary focus of chiropractic care at One Village, yet it is a wonderful side effect. While we help alleviate immediate pain in your back and neck, our family chiropractic community will focus on correcting not only the underlying cause of your current symptoms, but will also provide the appropriate care and ongoing maintenance needed to avoid ongoing and future damage to your spine and help you enjoy your life more fully. Neck pain, back pain and headache improvement are postive side effects once spinal motion is restored.
Chiropractic helps one build resilience, adaptation, capacity and overall health and wellness.
A critical component of your specific plan of care, foundation training focuses on the core of your body, and includes the muscles, joints, discs, ligaments and nerves that protect and control your pelvis and back. It is often recommended to help our patients prevent, control and manage spine related problems such as back pain, knee pain, hip pain, plantar fascitis (a painful inflammation of the fibrous tissue along the bottom of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes) and many other chronic pains, by helping you become stronger and experience movement without pain.
