0-1 month: Reflexes

  • Rooting, Sucking and Startling – How they interact with their environment (get them out of the bucket and seats)

1-4 month: Development of New Schemas

  • Find their thumb by accident for example and they realize they like it and repeat

4-8 months: Intentional Actions

  • Perform actions to create a response

8-12 months: Greater Exploration

  • Shake toys to produce sounds, responses to the environment become more coordinated

18-24 months: Object Permanence Emerges

  • Child becomes able to form mental representations of objects (symbolically imagine things that cannot be seen)
