“I Feel Good, So Why Should I Keep Going to the Chiropractor?”

“Well, I’ve learned the importance of staying healthy. For me and my family.”

That may be one of the most powerful answers I hear in practice.

As a chiropractor, I am often asked:

“Dr. Wendy, I feel good now. Why should I keep coming?”

My response is usually simple:

Because feeling good and functioning well are not always the same thing.

And because health is not something you fix once.

Health is something you build.

It is something you protect.

It is something you invest in.

It is something you create through the choices you make every day.

For many people, healthcare begins when something hurts.

A headache.

Back pain.

Neck tension.

Sciatica.

Digestive issues.

Sleep struggles.

Fatigue.

An anxious nervous system.

A child who is struggling to settle, focus, regulate, or sleep.

Those symptoms often become the reason someone first walks into our office.

But symptoms are rarely the whole story.

In fact, many people have significant stress, tension, dysfunction, and neurological overload long before symptoms ever appear.

The body is incredibly adaptable.

Until it isn’t.

Your Nervous System Runs Everything

If I could stand on a rooftop and shout one message to every family in Edmonton, it would be this:

Your nervous system controls everything.

Everything.

Your ability to move.

Your ability to heal.

Your ability to digest.

Your ability to sleep.

Your ability to regulate emotions.

Your immune function.

Your hormones.

Your balance.

Your coordination.

Your energy.

Your adaptability.

Your resilience.

Your ability to respond to life.

Every second of every day your brain is gathering information from your body and your environment.

It is making decisions.

It is prioritizing resources.

It is determining what deserves attention and what can wait.

It is coordinating every cell, tissue, organ, muscle, and gland in your body.

The nervous system is not simply involved in health.

It is the master control system of health.

When communication between the brain and body becomes less efficient, the body often begins compensating.

Most people don’t notice those compensations immediately.

The body is brilliant at hiding them.

Until one day it can’t.

We Don’t Wait for Cavities

Think about how we approach dental care.

Most people do not say:

“My teeth feel fine. I should stop brushing.”

Or:

“I don’t have a cavity today, so I don’t need a dental check-up anymore.”

That would sound ridiculous.

Instead, we brush daily.

We floss.

We get regular cleanings.

We have our teeth checked.

Not because something is wrong.

But because we value keeping them healthy.

The same principle applies to your spine and nervous system.

Why would we wait until there is pain, dysfunction, or illness before paying attention to the system that coordinates every function in the body?

Pain Is a Terrible Health Indicator

This may surprise some people.

Pain is actually one of the last signals many bodies produce.

Research has shown that significant spinal degeneration can exist with little or no pain.

Likewise, people can have substantial stress patterns in their nervous system and still feel relatively normal.

Why?

Because the body prioritizes survival.

Not comfort.

Not perfect posture.

Not ideal movement.

Not optimal function.

Survival.

As long as the body can compensate, it often will.

That is why many people are shocked when their posture photos, movement assessments, or neurological scans reveal stress patterns they had no idea existed.

They feel okay.

Yet their body is working far harder than it should to maintain that feeling.

Function First

At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, our focus has never been simply helping someone hurt less.

Our goal is helping people function better.

There is a huge difference.

When function improves, many things often improve alongside it:

  • Better sleep

  • Better adaptability to stress

  • Improved movement

  • Improved posture

  • Better energy

  • Better emotional regulation

  • Better athletic performance

  • Better recovery

  • Better resilience

  • Improved quality of life

The question is not:

“How little chiropractic care can I get away with?”

The better question is:

“How well do I want my nervous system to function?”

Because your nervous system influences every experience you have.

Every day.

For your entire life.

The World Is More Stressful Than Ever

Let’s be honest.

Modern life is demanding.

Most people sit too much.

Move too little.

Sleep too little.

Experience too much stress.

Spend too much time on screens.

Live in a constant state of stimulation.

Rush from one responsibility to the next.

Many families are operating with nervous systems that never truly settle.

They are surviving.

But they are not thriving.

This is where ongoing chiropractic care becomes valuable.

Not because life is broken.

But because life is demanding.

Regular chiropractic check-ups help ensure that the brain and body continue communicating as efficiently as possible despite the stresses we face daily.

Just as we exercise to maintain fitness, chiropractic care can help support neurological fitness.

What About Kids?

This conversation becomes even more important when we talk about children.

Many parents bring their babies and children initially because of a concern.

Sleep.

Tension.

Feeding challenges.

Digestion.

Development.

Posture.

Sports injuries.

But eventually those concerns improve.

Then comes the question:

“Do they still need to come?”

I often ask parents:

Would you rather wait until your child struggles?

Or help them build resilience before they struggle?

Healthy children deserve healthy nervous systems too.

Their brains are developing.

Their coordination is developing.

Their emotional regulation is developing.

Their immune systems are developing.

Their bodies are adapting to growth, learning, sports, school, social pressures, and technology.

Supporting healthy neurological function isn’t only for children who are struggling.

It is for children who are growing.

Wellness Is a Lifestyle

The healthiest families I know don’t wait for crises.

They create habits.

They move.

They eat nourishing foods.

They prioritize sleep.

They spend time together.

They laugh.

They connect.

They invest in their health before problems arise.

They understand that wellness is not an event.

It is a lifestyle.

Chiropractic fits into that lifestyle.

Not as a treatment for symptoms.

But as a proactive choice that supports overall function.

A Different Way to Think About Care

Imagine driving your vehicle for years without maintenance.

No oil changes.

No tire rotations.

No inspections.

No servicing.

Would the vehicle eventually still run?

Probably.

For a while.

But not as efficiently.

Not as reliably.

And eventually the wear would begin to show.

Your body deserves better than your vehicle.

Your nervous system deserves attention.

Your spine deserves attention.

Your health deserves attention.

Because unlike a vehicle, you cannot replace your nervous system.

You get one.

My Personal Answer

People occasionally ask me why I continue receiving chiropractic care.

The answer is simple.

Because I value my health.

Because I want to move well.

Because I want to think clearly.

Because I want energy.

Because I want to be present for my family.

Because I want to continue serving my community.

Because I understand that health is not the absence of symptoms.

Health is adaptability.

Health is resilience.

Health is function.

Health is living life fully.

And if there is something I can do to help my nervous system function more efficiently, why wouldn’t I?

So if you’ve ever found yourself asking:

“I feel good. Why should I keep going to the chiropractor?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“If my nervous system controls how I heal, adapt, move, think, respond, and live in this world, why wouldn’t I do everything possible to keep it working at its best?”

That is the real conversation.

Not pain.

Not symptoms.

Not conditions.

Health.

For you.

For your children.

For your family.

For your future.

Because feeling good is wonderful.

But building a life of health, resilience, adaptability, and vitality is even better.

Top 10 Myths on Chiropractic

Top 10 Myths About Chiropractic Care in Canada

By Dr. Wendy Coburn, One Village Family Chiropractic Community

Myth #1: “You only need a chiropractor if you have pain.”

Truth: Pain is often the last thing to show up and the first thing to leave. Many people have stress, tension, poor movement patterns, and nervous system dysfunction long before they experience pain. Chiropractic care is about supporting function, adaptability, and resilience—not just responding to symptoms.

Myth #2: “Once you start chiropractic care, you have to go forever.”

Truth: Nobody has to do anything. Chiropractic care is always your choice. Many people choose to continue because they notice they move better, sleep better, handle stress better, and feel healthier when their nervous system is functioning well. It is similar to exercise—you don’t exercise because you’re broken; you exercise because you value your health.

Myth #3: “Chiropractors only treat backs and necks.”

Truth: Chiropractors work with the spine because it protects the nervous system. While people often come in for back or neck pain, the goal is to help the brain and body communicate more effectively. Better nervous system function can influence movement, posture, sleep, stress adaptation, and overall well-being.

Myth #4: “If it doesn’t hurt, nothing is wrong.”

Truth: Pain is not always a reliable measure of health. Many people have significant wear and tear, poor posture, limited mobility, and nervous system stress without pain. The body is incredibly good at compensating until it can’t anymore.

Myth #5: “Children don’t need chiropractic care.”

Truth: Children experience physical and neurological stress too. Birth, learning to crawl, falls, sports, screen time, heavy backpacks, and growth spurts all place demands on a developing nervous system. We are not looking for disease—we are supporting healthy growth, development, movement, and adaptation.

Myth #6: “Chiropractic care is unsafe.”

Truth: Chiropractic care has an excellent safety record when provided by a licensed chiropractor. Every day, millions of adjustments are performed around the world. Chiropractors are trained to determine when chiropractic care is appropriate and when a referral to another healthcare provider is necessary.

Myth #7: “Adjustments hurt.”

Truth: Most people are surprised by how gentle chiropractic care can be. Many adjustments use light pressure, specialized tables, or precise contacts. Infants, seniors, athletes, and pregnant women often receive very different adjustments based on their age, size, and needs.

Myth #8: “Chiropractors just crack backs.”

Truth: The adjustment is only one piece of the puzzle. At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, we look at posture, movement patterns, nervous system function, lifestyle habits, stress, sleep, nutrition, exercise, and overall adaptability. The goal is to help people build health, not simply create a temporary change in a joint.

Myth #9: “Chiropractic care isn’t based on science.”

Truth: Research continues to grow showing chiropractic care influences spinal movement, brain-body communication, balance, proprioception, and how the nervous system processes information. Researchers such as Heidi Haavik have spent years studying how adjustments affect brain function and neurological processing.

Myth #10: “Chiropractic care is about fixing conditions.”

Truth: Chiropractic care is not about chasing diagnoses. It is about helping the body function at its highest potential by reducing interference within the neurospinal system. We don’t create healing—the body does that. Our role is to help support the environment in which healing, adaptation, and resilience can occur.

The Biggest Myth of All

The biggest myth may be that health is simply the absence of symptoms.

True health is much bigger than that.

It is having the energy to play with your kids.

It is sleeping well.

It is recovering from stress.

It is moving with ease.

It is thinking clearly.

It is adapting to life’s challenges.

It is waking up excited about your day.

At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, we believe chiropractic care is not about helping people become less sick.

It is about helping people become more healthy.

That’s a very different conversation—and one worth having.
