It is up to each person to create a lifestyle change that removes interference. You see, it shouldn’t be up to anyone else to remove or add this or that. I ultimately wish for you to become free of interference, and therefore empowered to trust in your body’s own Innate Intelligence. To understand what kinds of things that cause interference, identify the effect on your own life, and hear your own body telling you what you need. I would like you to become self-driven, self-aware, and ultimately stronger at self-healing.
Let’s review the areas, (categories whereby subluxation can occur). Please note throughout I will use the word interference often denoting subluxation for ease of reading and understanding.
- Movement – oxygen and exercise
- Nutrition
- Toxins
- Mindset or mental emotional
- Technology
- Shifting perspectives
More than ever before, individuals want more out of life than to be sick! Yeh
Individuals want to thrive. Health as defined by the world health organization as far back as 1948, “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being – and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Pope John Paul II – “Health is a dynamic tension towards physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony, and not only in the absence of illness.” Healthcare has always been enmeshed in philosophy. Hippocrates declaring, “do no harm.” Modern medicine has been divorced from philosophy. Historically the health philosophy connected people as whole beings. Not so much any more.
Chiropractic leads with the philosophy of wellness and vitalism. Leading with the understanding that the body is designed to be healthy. Innate being the underlying healer, in which we can do nothing to cause healing or health of our own volition. Yet- our bodies are intended to be healthy, and that force of innate strength – the same invisible force that creates life and ends it – drives us constantly towards wellness. Interference with this natural function is what causes disease.
I am writing here to review the categories that impact this natural function. You can choose – choose to adapt and possibly make changes in these lifestyle areas to support your innate healing ability.
Sources of Interference:
- Physical
- Chemical
- Emotional
- Physical
Some physical stressors may seem obvious. Poor posture especially when it comes to desk work and computers and smartphones. Poor posture can place abnormal unhealthy stress on parts of the neuro spinal system, leading to soreness and pain that leads you to chiropractic.
With chiropractic care your body starts to feel better. Sometimes, you notice the adjustment leads to other areas of your body feeling or functioning better. Other forms of physical stress might block oxygenation and nutrients. This can look like inadequate sleep, injuries, physically demanding work, a sedentary lifestyle, unreasonably strenuous exercise, poor breathing to name a few. Any instance of the parts and pieces of your body being mistreated, misused, and maladjusted can become a physical stressor and interfere with innate processes that should lead to health.
Chemical;
Let’s look at the most obvious first. Interactions with toxins interfere with the body’s original design. Though we are born with intricate detoxification pathways – the liver constantly cleaning blood, the excretory progress, sweat and fluid balance – we can still become mired in the effects of toxins. Why? Because of interference within the environment.
We are all bombarded day and night with toxins. Our homes, schools, and offices are built and cleaned often with toxic materials, and we are closed inside of them for hours at a time. Our toiletries, clothes, and food bring an onslaught of toxins in small and large amounts at every turn. Our lungs, skin, and digestive tract stay on high alert, in constant response to the world around us.
A key facet of the westernized, mechanistic philosophy of health is that it attempts to heal with chemical adjustments to address symptoms of disease, where chiropractic healing is driven by innately-driving healing abilities of the body itself. No one would deny the use of lifesaving drugs once other options are exhausted, the side-effects that medication carry cannot be overlooked. In other words medication is a form of chemical interference. Yet there is a benefit risk ratio in many cases.
Many natural health practitioners still hold a mechanistic philosophy with immediate prescription to alter biochemical processes in the body. Let me explain: Good foods are there to nourish our bodies. Supplements provide nutrients where diet and lifestyle might come up short, so there certainly can be a place for “natural remedies.” Approaches to health diverge when the food and supplements and products become mechanisms to force change.
Emotional;
Mental and Emotional health is difficult to maintain, resolve, or even notice in many parts of the world. Why? We move through life at such a rapid pace, practically worshiping the tangible results we gain from productivity and busyness. The same goes for health, as we have seen massive campaigns against obesity or vices without any care for what has created the emotional need to overeat or turn to a vice in the first place. The effects of emotional stress as interference can be measured in terms of hormonal shifts. We can point to fight or flight, cortisol, and the effects of these imbalances have on the brain and body.
The big question of interference is this: what stands in between the physical body and the Innate Intelligence that runs it? What keeps us from aligning with the invisible, innate forces that keep our cells connected and vibrating from conception, until our last breath? From a chiropractic standpoint we utilize core functions of chiropractic, nutrition, mindset, oxygen and exercise, and minimal toxins as ways to seek to understand and facilitate health and life.
Removing Interference;
If we are bombarded with interference in so many ways, then, how can we possibly begin to clear it all away to regain that innate health? Your answer will not be the same as anyone else’s for one. Why can one person drink soda and not get ill, while the other takes a sip and immediately feels its effects? Why are there so many different diet plans that seem to work or not work inexplicably? Why can two very different chiropractic adjustments lead to equally improved health?
Part of the reasoning is the body’s level or or ability of adapting and responding to the environment. No two people have lived or experienced or expressed the same life. We don’t always know how a body will respond when interference is removed. My role as a chiropractor is to identify interference, adjust to remove it – yours to make changes in your lifestyle by reducing and removing factors that cause interference thus letting the body harness its innate recuperative powers to heal on its own.
We prioritize chiropractic first. It is often the simplest change one can make to remove interference. The more the causes of interference are reduced and removed the less interference in the neuro spinal system that develops. As a chiropractor I, “find it, fix it, leave it alone.” Finding the interference, and allowing the body to heal itself is the core of chiropractic. Medicine is the study of disease and what causes man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes man to live. – Dr. B.J. Palmer
