Vertigo – Causes and Care

chiropractic care at west Edmonton or one village family chiropractic and now to the Highlands chiropractic office location

The world is spinning and maybe you are losing your balance when you go to get up, when you walk or move, when you drive your vehicle over a bridge. Vertigo is not just a feeling like losing your balance it can also be that feeling that something is not right.

More than likely the body is stuck in fight or flight and the body can’t keep up – your system/body doesn’t feel secure – Vertigo is not a weakness, it is your body’s response to life and lifestyle. It is how the body has chosen to adapt to what it has and is experiencing and is a response to the stress your physiology is under and its trying to tell you something. It is telling you to reset, stop doing something, make change as your body/mind can’t keep going the way it is.

Healing vertigo is not about fixing your head or your ear in many cases – it is about helping your body feel safe, secure, and grounded. Your nervous system is overloaded overwhelmed and exhausted and it has to release this stress. Vertigo is it’s release!

Vertigo and chiropractic. These two go hand in hand to help you get stronger and healthier and feel better. Chiropractic supports your bodies ability to heal itself and look after itself – just like it has when it created vertigo.

Chiropractic helps you get to the cause versus chasing the symptoms – it takes work – yes – often individuals struggle with recognizing they have to take action to change so their physiology is not getting overloaded.

Vertigo is your body’s way of saying something is not right – To re-iterate vertigo is one of the bodies signals and symptoms demonstrating there is a deeper cause.

How quickly vertigo goes away is controlled by you – if the primary cause is overload and lifestyle and subluxation that has occurred do to overload. When our bodies feel overwhelmed, stressed acutely for long periods your body adapts – it protects itself to the stress as much as it can and one of the things it does is Subluxates your spine and nervous system.

A subluxation is improper motion and alignment of 2 vertebrae coming together to form a joint that normally moves through a full range of motion. When full or partial motion is lost it impacts everything within and around it. The main thing is it negatively impacts nerve flow. Thus directly impacting communication of the brain to the body and the body back to the brain. Many feel nothing. Some feel something is off and shrug it off as it will go away feeling. Others feel swelling, some feel tightness or spasm, some feel numbness, others feel irritation and maybe 10% feel pain. Meanwhile the subluxation has been there for weeks or months or years before the “pain” arrives. This is your body’s way of protecting itself until the crisis goes away. In many cases once the stressor or emergency has left your body releases it. Our lifestyles have gotten to the point where being busy – and everything is an emergency our bodies can’t release it on their own. Chiropractic is needed more than ever.

Where does vertigo come into this. Well your balance centres are primarily found in your neck and joints of your spine. Not your eyes – not your ears. Yes your eyes and ears play a part for sure. They are not the primary centres of balance.

When a joint is in “lock down,” or is subluxated to protect its most precious asset, the spinal cord and nervous system, to avoid a threat the normal movement of joints is lost negatively impacting signals to the brain to tell your body where you are in space and vice versa.

Following me? It’s simple, yet because we think that vertigo is happening to us, like it something we have caught – it can be hard to grasp.

Recap – Too much overload to the body – the body responds by releasing stress with vertigo to slow us down to allow time for healing and rest. This occurs as a result of subluxation not allowing the brain and body to communicate and also it primarily happens in the upper neck which is the foundation of balance and coordination. When the cause is not eliminated and vertigo is left untreated a deeper disease process or diagnosis is given.

When a subluxated area of the spine, which is an area in the spine that is not moving – not allowing proper muscle, nerve and proprioceptive, and paraspinal input, and decreasing blood flow to the area, directly impacting the area of the brain that connects that joint and body, our balance and coordination becomes limited and our bodies shut down mechanism, (Which is built in natually to protect our nervous system from the stress and overload its experiencing), is trying to say, “help.” All the other signals your body has given you have not been heard or listened to or responded to appropriately so your body is going to show you in another form.

The result is lack of coordination, clumsiness and or vertigo. We see vertigo more and more in our adults as their physiology has gotten tired of compensating for so many years and this is how it responds.

Chiropractic care detects and removes the subluxation to allow the body to navigate it internal and external environment with more efficiency, with greater adaptability and resiliency to support its natural state of health and healing – to allow more efficient regulation and in many cases remove dysautonomia. Along with chiropractic adjustments it is essential that the individual includes nutrients that the body does not produce on its own such as Vitamin D and Omega 3 to support and fuel the nervous system, remove toxins when and where possible, move daily throughout the day, work on mindset such as gratitude.

Sometimes the individual needs to take a time audit and task or to do audit to see where non essential things can be delegated or ask for help so they are not overloaded. This is where individual care is essential as outcomes are based on the individuals lifestyle, past accumulation of stressors and or damage to the nervous system and spine. Motivation for healing is imperative.

Sometimes yes the inner ear and its otoliths are a part of vertigo yet the inner workings of the ear are controlled via nerves from the brain stem and adjustments directly impact this. The Epily maneauvre is sometimes necessary as well.

Let me use an analogy – if you have a heart condition – your medical doctor tells you to start exercising and change your diet along with prescribing some pills. If you only take the pills and don’t change your lifestyle the likelihood of success to get healthier is not going to be the outcome.

Health is something whereby you need to take daily action – it is hard as most want and expect someone else to fix it and have it done yesturday. It does not work that way.

Let’s work together – to help you feel empowered and take control of your health – learn and understand what you personally need to do to change and heal. You have to act – Health and healing is not PASSIVE –
