Oral Dysfunction - what is it, what’s the cause and where can I get help?

Oral dysfunction can occur at any age.  Often it begins at birth when the cranial bones and spinal bones interfere with signals that flow through the nerves not allowing the muscles used for nursing or eating to work efficiently.

This impacts the shape and development of the skull palate and jaw.

Dysfunction can also occur after orthodontics – during and after orthodontic work the Sphenoid and other cranial bones, spinal bones in the neck can lose their normal motion and alignment, again impacting how the nerves can communicate disrupting the health of neurospinal system.

Concussion as well is another example of dysfunction brought on by improper movement and alignment from the trauma to the skull, dura, and the neck that impacts organ and tissue function due to nerve interference.

Inflammation and muscle tone also impacts oral function due to lifestyle choices.

There are many reasons why this occurs and early on it impacts feeding, swallowing a necessity for life which can progress to challenge eating solids, onset of speech, growth of the palate, jaw and posture.  As time goes on it it can impact the airway.    Even early on infants and children or teens who mouth breathe. This can indicate an oral dysfunction challenge and chiropractic (SOT), myofunctional exercises which we can share with you is a conservative way to help.
