Why Might a Baby See a Chiropractor?
Gentle Chiropractic Care for Babies, Toddlers and Growing Families
At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, we provide gentle chiropractic assessment and care for infants, children and families. Our focus is on evaluating the developing spine, joints, muscles and neuromusculoskeletal system while supporting healthy movement and physical function throughout childhood.
The first months and years of life involve rapid growth and development. During this time, babies experience many physical changes as they adapt to life outside the womb. Some families choose to have their baby assessed by a chiropractor following birth or if they notice concerns with movement, comfort or feeding.
Babies may be brought for chiropractic assessment following:
- A long or rapid labour
- Assisted delivery
- Caesarean birth
- A preferred head-turning position
- Difficulty turning their head equally in both directions
- Changes in posture or movement
- Feeding or latch concerns, alongside appropriate medical or lactation support
- General concerns about their baby’s spinal or musculoskeletal development
Our Approach
Our assessment focuses on your baby’s:
- Spinal and joint motion
- Muscle tone
- Head and neck movement
- Cranial and postural symmetry
- Age-appropriate movement patterns
- Feeding mechanics as they relate to the musculoskeletal examination
When appropriate, we also work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, including family physicians, pediatricians, lactation consultants, dentists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other providers involved in your child’s care.
If your baby has symptoms such as excessive crying, feeding difficulties, reflux, vomiting, poor weight gain, fever or other health concerns, we encourage assessment by the appropriate healthcare provider. These symptoms can have many different causes and may require medical evaluation.
Gentle Chiropractic Care
If chiropractic care is appropriate, adjustments are tailored to your baby’s age, size and stage of development.
Infant adjustments are:
- Gentle
- Specific
- Adapted to developing tissues
- Performed using very light pressure
Parents are encouraged to remain with their baby throughout the visit, and we explain every step of the examination and care process.
Supporting Healthy Development
Regular movement is an important part of childhood development. Chiropractors assess how the spine and joints move and function as part of a comprehensive neuromusculoskeletal examination.
Many families choose chiropractic care to help support their child’s musculoskeletal health as they grow through important developmental stages, including tummy time, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and walking.
