Collaborative Care with Chiropractic

Pediatric Chiropractic Care in Edmonton

A Gentle, Individualized and Collaborative Approach for Babies, Children and Teens

The first years of a child’s life are filled with remarkable growth and change.

Babies learn to lift their heads, roll, sit, crawl, stand and walk. Children continue developing strength, balance, coordination and confidence as they explore their world. Teenagers adapt to growth spurts, school, technology, sports, injuries and changing physical demands.

Every child develops differently. There is no single movement pattern, timeline or approach to care that is appropriate for every child.

At One Village Family Chiropractic, pediatric chiropractic care begins with listening. We take time to understand your concerns, your child’s health history and how your child is moving and functioning. We then complete an age-appropriate musculoskeletal assessment to determine whether chiropractic care may be suitable.

Not every child requires chiropractic care. Recommendations are based on the individual assessment—not simply the child’s age, birth history or symptoms.

Why Might a Parent Bring Their Child to a Chiropractor?

Parents may request a chiropractic assessment when they have questions or concerns about their child’s:

  • Neck, back or joint movement
  • Comfort in particular positions
  • Head or neck preference
  • Posture
  • Mobility
  • Movement symmetry
  • Muscle or joint tension
  • Recovery following a minor musculoskeletal injury
  • Physical demands from school, technology, hobbies or sports

Some parents also want a better understanding of how their child moves, rests, sits, stands or participates in physical activity.

A chiropractic assessment does not mean that chiropractic care will automatically be recommended.

Chiropractic Care for Babies

Babies cannot tell us where they feel uncomfortable, so an infant assessment relies on careful history, observation and gentle physical examination.

Parents may request an assessment when they notice:

  • A strong preference for looking in one direction
  • Uneven or restricted neck movement
  • Discomfort in particular positions
  • Difficulty tolerating tummy time
  • Noticeable body stiffness or asymmetry
  • Concerns about how the baby moves or rests
  • A desire for a musculoskeletal assessment following pregnancy or birth

These observations can have many possible explanations. They do not automatically indicate a chiropractic problem.

Feeding difficulties, persistent crying, reflux, changes in breathing, poor weight gain, fever, lethargy and developmental concerns require assessment by the appropriate healthcare professional. Chiropractic care does not replace medical, pediatric, lactation, dental, physiotherapy, occupational-therapy or speech-language assessment.

When appropriate, we work collaboratively with the child’s healthcare team.

Chiropractic Care for Toddlers and Young Children

Toddlers and young children are constantly moving. They climb, run, jump, tumble, fall and try again.

Parents may request an assessment following:

  • A minor fall or musculoskeletal injury
  • A noticeable change in movement
  • Persistent neck, back or joint discomfort
  • Difficulty moving comfortably in one direction
  • Postural concerns
  • Physical demands related to play or activities

Young children are never expected to remain perfectly still or perform on command. The assessment is adapted to their age, communication, comfort and willingness to participate.

A child may sit on a parent’s lap, hold a favourite toy, move around the room or take breaks whenever needed.

Chiropractic Care for School-Aged Children and Teens

As children grow, their physical demands change.

School, backpacks, prolonged sitting, computers, phones, musical instruments, sports and rapid growth can all influence posture, movement and muscular comfort.

An assessment may be considered when a child or teenager experiences:

  • Neck, back or joint discomfort
  • Muscle tension
  • Reduced or uncomfortable movement
  • Postural concerns
  • Difficulty returning to activity after a minor musculoskeletal injury
  • Physical demands related to sport, dance, music or work
  • Repetitive strain from prolonged sitting or technology use

Participation in sport does not automatically mean a child requires chiropractic care. The decision should be based on the child’s history, clinical findings, needs and goals.

When an injury requires medical evaluation, diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy or another form of care, the appropriate referral will be recommended.

What Happens During a Pediatric Chiropractic Assessment?

Every assessment begins with a conversation.

Depending on your child’s age and the reason for the visit, we may discuss:

  • Pregnancy and birth history when relevant
  • Medical history
  • Previous injuries
  • Current symptoms or concerns
  • Developmental history
  • Medications
  • Previous imaging
  • Activities, sports and physical demands
  • Care provided by other health professionals
  • Your child’s and family’s goals

The physical assessment is individualized and may include observation or examination of:

  • Posture
  • General movement
  • Neck and spinal mobility
  • Joint movement
  • Muscle tone
  • Areas of musculoskeletal tension
  • Movement symmetry
  • Balance or coordination when clinically relevant
  • Age-appropriate orthopaedic and neurological findings

The purpose is to understand your child’s musculoskeletal function and determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate.

The assessment is not used to diagnose unrelated developmental, behavioural, digestive, immune, airway, sleep or systemic conditions.

What Does Joint Dysfunction or Subluxation Mean?

At One Village Family Chiropractic, the term joint dysfunction/subluxation may be used to describe altered joint movement or related musculoskeletal findings identified during an assessment.

Assessment findings may include:

  • Reduced or altered joint movement
  • Muscular tension
  • Tenderness
  • Changes in movement symmetry
  • Postural or functional findings relevant to the child’s concern

The term is not used to suggest that a spinal finding causes unrelated diseases, developmental disorders or systemic health conditions.

Any findings will be explained in clear language so you understand what was assessed, what was found and whether care is being recommended.

What Does Pediatric Chiropractic Care Involve?

When chiropractic care is considered clinically appropriate, it is adapted to the child’s:

  • Age
  • Size
  • Stage of development
  • Comfort
  • Clinical findings
  • Reason for seeking care

Care may include gentle, age-appropriate manual techniques directed toward identified muscles, joints or related musculoskeletal structures.

The care provided to an infant or young child is different from the care that may be provided to an adult.

No treatment is provided until the parent or legal guardian has received an explanation of the findings and recommendations and has provided informed consent.

Older children and teens should also be included in the conversation in a manner appropriate to their age and understanding. Their comfort, questions and willingness to participate matter.

A parent or legal guardian may remain with the child throughout the appointment.

Informed Consent and Your Child’s Comfort

Before care begins, we will explain:

  • What was assessed
  • What was found
  • What care is being recommended
  • Why it is being recommended
  • The expected benefits
  • Possible risks or side effects
  • Reasonable alternatives
  • The option of receiving no treatment
  • Whether referral or collaborative care is recommended

You are encouraged to ask questions at any time.

Consent is an ongoing conversation. A parent or legal guardian may pause or decline care. A child’s words, body language, comfort and willingness to participate will also be respected throughout the appointment.

No particular outcome can be guaranteed. Children respond differently, and recommendations may change based on their response, clinical findings and evolving needs.

Does Every Child Need Chiropractic Care?

No.

A child’s age, birth experience, posture, participation in sports or stage of development does not automatically mean they require chiropractic care.

Some children may have musculoskeletal findings for which chiropractic care is a reasonable option. Others may not require care. Some children may need assessment or treatment from another healthcare professional.

Our responsibility is to assess each child individually, explain what we find and make an appropriate recommendation without creating fear or unnecessary urgency.

Working With Your Child’s Healthcare Team

Children benefit when healthcare providers communicate clearly and respect one another’s roles.

Depending on your child’s needs, collaborative care may involve:

  • Family physicians
  • Pediatricians
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Speech-language pathologists
  • Lactation consultants
  • Dentists or orthodontists
  • Registered dietitians
  • Psychologists or counsellors
  • Other qualified healthcare professionals

Chiropractic care is not a replacement for medical assessment or emergency care.

When a concern falls outside chiropractic scope, or when another provider is better positioned to evaluate it, referral or collaboration will be recommended.

When Medical Assessment Is Important

Please contact your physician, pediatrician or another appropriate healthcare professional when your child has concerns such as:

  • Persistent fever
  • Repeated vomiting or signs of dehydration
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Colour changes around the lips or face
  • Poor feeding or inadequate weight gain
  • Unusual lethargy or difficulty waking
  • Seizure activity
  • Sudden weakness
  • Loss of balance or altered movement
  • Loss of a previously acquired developmental skill
  • Significant injury or suspected fracture
  • A serious fall or head injury
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Persistent inconsolable crying
  • Concerns about development, behaviour or overall health

Call 911 or seek emergency medical care when symptoms are sudden, severe or potentially life-threatening.

Our Approach at One Village Family Chiropractic

Our approach is calm, respectful and individualized.

We will:

  • Listen to your concerns
  • Complete an age-appropriate assessment
  • Explain our findings clearly
  • Recommend care only when clinically appropriate
  • Obtain informed consent before providing care
  • Respect your child’s comfort and communication
  • Monitor progress
  • Modify recommendations when necessary
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals
  • Refer when a concern falls outside our role

Our goal is not to convince every family that their child needs chiropractic care. Our goal is to provide clear information, an appropriate musculoskeletal assessment and an honest recommendation.

What Parents Can Expect

You can expect a welcoming environment where your questions are encouraged.

Please bring any information that may help us understand your child’s history, including relevant medical reports, imaging, diagnoses or recommendations from other healthcare professionals.

Following the assessment, we will discuss:

  • Whether relevant musculoskeletal findings were identified
  • Whether chiropractic care is a reasonable option
  • What care may involve
  • Whether home movement or positioning guidance is appropriate
  • How progress will be monitored
  • Whether collaboration or referral is recommended

An assessment does not guarantee that chiropractic care will be recommended.

CLINICAL BRIEFING FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION

Elevating Pediatric Outcomes Through

Collaborative, Neurologically Focused Care

A strategic overview for Pediatricians, Oral Function Specialists, Dentists, Allied Health Professionals, and Family Wellness Providers.

As healthcare providers, our collective goal is to ensure every child has the opportunity to be at their best level of health. Whether your specialty is airway health, craniofacial development, primary pediatric medicine, or physical rehabilitation, the underlying denominator is identical: the central nervous system must be free from interference to support growth and physical adaptation efficiently.

When structural misalignments or altered spinal biomechanics exist—particularly in the upper cervical region—they do not merely cause local musculoskeletal discomfort. They disrupt the vital sensory feedback loops traveling directly to the brainstem and higher brain centers, causing altered afferent input.

The Neurophysiological Cascade

By addressing these vertebral subluxations, neurologically focused chiropractic care eliminates nerve interference, supporting ones body to function and heal with more ease and efficiency.

Synergistic Clinical Frameworks

Gentle, precise neuro-tonal adjustments help the body to rebalance itself such as down-regulate sympathetic overdrive, restoring the parasympathetic tone mandatory for feeding, sleep, digestion, and neurological development.

Cortical Changes & Sensorimotor Integration (Dr. Heidi Haavik)

The neuroscientific baseline for spinal care is established by neurophysiologist Dr. Heidi Haavik. Her research utilizing advanced EEG protocols shows that spinal subluxations alter sensorimotor integration—the central process by which the brain maps, integrates, and commands bodily motor function. Her data demonstrates that precise adjustments improve function specifically within the prefrontal cortex, the executive hub governing emotional regulation, spatial orientation, cognitive focus, and coordinated motor output.

Neurodevelopmental Pathways & Innate Potential (Dr. Monika Buerger & Dr. Wendy Coburn)

Proper central nervous system maturation requires pristine execution of sequential motor milestones. As emphasized by Dr. Monika Buerger, early movement patterns build the brain’s foundational connectomes. If a child suffers from underlying spinal or cranial subluxations, their primary motor templates are compromised, resulting in “neurological overflow”. In community practice, Dr. Wendy Coburn (One Village Family Chiropractic) focuses on removing nerve interference, supporting an individuals natural ability to so a child’s internal communication line remains unhindered during critical developmental windows.

Cross-Disciplinary Synergies & Co-Management

Oral Function Specialists, IBCLCs, & Pediatric Dentists

The alignment of the upper cervical spine and cranium directly impacts the motor and sensory branches of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, XII, and the Vagus nerve (CN X).

• Structural Interdependence: Upper cervical subluxations or dural tension can mimic or exacerbate oral dysfunction, including latch/suck insufficiency and jaw tracking asymmetries.

• Pre/Post-Frenectomy Care: Neurologically based chiropractic care reduces hypertonicity in the suboccipital and suprahyoid musculature. Addressing this tension prior to a tie release optimizes surgical access, while post-procedural care ensures smooth neurological adaptation to the expanded oral range of motion.

Neuromuskuloskeletal-chiropractic care addresses the mechanical and autonomic triggers.

Myofunctional Therapists, PTs, & Occupational Therapists

Therapeutic motor retraining relies heavily on pristine afferent feedback loops to achieve long-term cortical remodeling.

• Amplifying Therapy Outcomes: If a child’s brain receives distorted proprioceptive information due to subluxations, the retention of therapeutic exercises is compromised. Chiropractic care stabilizes this background feedback, enhancing neuroplastic adaptation.

Establishing a Unified Standard of Care

By moving from a reactive, symptomatic model to a proactive model centered on neuromusculoskeletal chiropractic, we can establish an entirely new baseline of health for families. We welcome interdisciplinary dialogue, clinical casesharing, and co-management protocols to better serve our mutual pediatric clients.
