“Once You Go to a Chiropractor, Do You Have to Keep Going?” The Truth About Chiropractic Care and Lifelong Health
By Dr. Wendy Coburn
One Village Family Chiropractic Community
One of the most common misconceptions I hear is:
“I’ve heard that once you start going to a chiropractor, you have to keep going forever.”
I always smile when I hear this because it reflects a misunderstanding of what chiropractic care actually is.
The truth is simple:
You never have to keep going to a chiropractor.
No chiropractor can make you come.
No chiropractor can force you to continue care.
Every person has complete freedom to decide what they do with their health.
What I have found after more than two decades in practice is something quite different.
Most people who choose to continue chiropractic care do so because they discover how much it contributes to their quality of life.
Not because they have to.
Because they want to.
Because they notice the difference.
Because they begin to understand that health is not something we fix once and then forget about.
Health is something we continually build.
We Don’t Ask the Same Question About Other Healthy Habits
Think about exercise for a moment.
Imagine someone saying:
“If I start exercising, am I going to have to keep exercising forever?”
Well, technically no.
You can stop anytime.
But what happens?
Strength decreases.
Endurance decreases.
Flexibility decreases.
Energy often decreases.
The benefits fade.
Not because exercise failed.
Because the body adapts to what it repeatedly experiences.
The same is true of healthy eating.
Nobody says:
“Once I start eating vegetables, do I have to keep eating vegetables forever?”
Of course not.
You can stop.
But we continue because we understand the value.
The same is true for:
Good sleep
Healthy relationships
Movement
Stress management
Time outdoors
Social connection
Setting boundaries
Practicing gratitude
Finding joy
These aren’t treatments.
They’re habits.
They’re investments in health.
Most people who continue chiropractic care eventually begin to see it the same way.
Chiropractic Care Is Not About Fixing Broken People
This may be one of the biggest shifts in thinking that occurs during care.
Many people first come to see us because something hurts.
Maybe it is:
Neck pain
Back pain
Headaches
Pregnancy discomfort
Sciatica
Poor posture
Stress
Pain often gets people through the door.
But over time many discover something bigger.
They realize chiropractic isn’t simply about symptoms.
It is about function.
It is about helping the body communicate more effectively.
It is about supporting the nervous system.
It is about helping the body adapt to life’s physical, chemical, and emotional stresses.
As chiropractors, we assess for and correct subluxations.
A subluxation is not simply a bone out of place.
It is a pattern of dysfunction involving movement, muscle tone, neurological communication, and adaptation.
The body often creates these patterns in response to stress.
Our role is to help remove that interference so the brain and body can communicate more efficiently.
What the Research Shows
Research from chiropractor and neuroscientist Heidi Haavik has helped us better understand what happens when adjustments are delivered.
Her work suggests chiropractic adjustments influence how the brain processes information coming from the body.
Studies have demonstrated changes in:
Sensorimotor integration
Joint position awareness
Movement control
Muscle function
Brain processing
In simple language:
The adjustment affects more than the spine.
It influences the way the brain receives and interprets information from the body.
When the brain receives better information, it has the opportunity to make better decisions.
That is why so many people report improvements in areas they were not expecting.
They often tell me:
“I sleep better.”
“I feel calmer.”
“I recover from stress more quickly.”
“I have more energy.”
“I feel more like myself.”
These observations remind us that health is much bigger than pain.
Life Never Stops Creating Stress
One reason people choose to continue chiropractic care is because life never stops happening.
Stress doesn’t disappear.
In fact, life often becomes more demanding.
We experience:
Work pressures
Parenting challenges
Financial concerns
Sports injuries
Technology overload
Poor sleep
Hormonal changes
Emotional stress
Aging
Every one of these experiences influences the nervous system.
Every one of these experiences influences adaptation.
Your body is constantly responding to the world around you.
The goal isn’t to eliminate stress.
The goal is to become better at adapting to it.
This is where many people begin to appreciate wellness care.
Wellness Care Is About Staying Ahead
I often tell patients:
“I’d rather help you stay healthy than wait until you’re struggling.”
That doesn’t mean life will be perfect.
It doesn’t mean you won’t experience challenges.
It means you’re investing in your capacity to respond to those challenges.
Think about two people.
One waits until their car completely breaks down before getting it serviced.
The other performs regular maintenance.
Which vehicle is likely to last longer?
Which one is more reliable?
Which one is less likely to leave them stranded?
The same principle applies to our bodies.
Most of us understand preventative maintenance when it comes to our homes, vehicles, and finances.
Yet many people wait until their health is deteriorating before taking action.
Wellness care is a different mindset.
It is the mindset of maintaining and strengthening health before crisis occurs.
The People Who Stay Under Care
Something interesting happens after people have been under care for a while.
Their goals begin to change.
Initially they may have come because of neck pain.
Then they notice:
Better sleep
Better mobility
Better energy
Better stress resilience
Better recovery after workouts
Better posture
Better awareness of their bodies
They begin to realize chiropractic has become part of their health routine.
Not unlike:
Going for walks
Strength training
Eating nutritious foods
Spending time with friends
Practicing mindfulness
Getting adequate sleep
These individuals aren’t trapped in care.
They’re choosing care.
Just as someone chooses to exercise.
Just as someone chooses to eat well.
Just as someone chooses to prioritize their mental health.
Health Is a Lifestyle
One of the greatest gifts I have witnessed throughout my career is watching people shift from a sickness mindset to a health mindset.
A sickness mindset asks:
“What’s wrong with me?”
“How quickly can I get rid of this symptom?”
“What can fix this?”
A health mindset asks:
“How can I become stronger?”
“How can I become more resilient?”
“How can I improve my ability to adapt?”
“What habits support my body’s ability to heal?”
Those are very different questions.
The second set of questions creates a very different life.
What I Hope for Every Patient
My goal has never been to convince people they need chiropractic care forever.
My goal is to help people understand that health requires participation.
No adjustment can replace:
Movement
Sleep
Healthy food
Hydration
Joy
Purpose
Relationships
Boundaries
Stress management
These all matter.
They all contribute to health.
Chiropractic care is one piece of that puzzle.
An important piece, but still one piece.
When people choose to continue care, it is usually because they have experienced firsthand how much better they function when their nervous system is supported and their body is adapting well.
Not because they have to.
Because it has become important to them.
The Bottom Line
Do you have to keep going to a chiropractor once you start?
Absolutely not.
You are always in charge of your health decisions.
What many people discover, however, is that chiropractic care becomes something they value.
Not because they are broken.
Not because they are dependent.
Not because they are being fixed.
But because they are investing in their health.
Just like movement.
Just like healthy food.
Just like good sleep.
Just like meaningful relationships.
Just like laughter and joy.
Health is not a destination.
It is a lifelong process.
At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, our mission is to help individuals and families build healthier, more resilient nervous systems so they can experience life more fully—not simply survive it.
And for many people, chiropractic care becomes one of the ways they choose to do exactly that.
