Why Every Newborn Should Have a Chiropractic Assessment
A Nervous System Approach to Supporting Growth, Development, and Adaptability
By Dr. Wendy Coburn
One of the most common questions I hear from parents is:
“Why would a newborn need to see a chiropractor? They haven’t even had time to develop problems yet.”
It’s a fair question.
The answer lies in understanding what chiropractic truly is and what it is not.
At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, we do not assess babies because they have symptoms. We assess babies because they have a nervous system.
Just as parents take their newborn for hearing tests, vision checks, weight checks, and developmental assessments, a chiropractic assessment is another way of evaluating how well a baby’s body is adapting to life outside the womb.
The focus is not on treating a condition. The focus is on supporting optimal function.
Birth Is a Big Event
Birth is one of the most physically demanding experiences a human being will ever go through.
For months, babies grow in a confined space. During labour they twist, rotate, flex, extend, and compress through the birth canal.
Even in uncomplicated births, tremendous forces are placed on a baby’s head, neck, jaw, spine, pelvis, and nervous system.
Research has estimated that significant traction forces can occur through the cervical spine during delivery.
This is not necessarily harmful. Birth is a normal process.
However, every birth leaves an imprint on the developing nervous system.
Sometimes babies adapt beautifully.
Sometimes they need a little help.
The Nervous System Controls Everything
The nervous system is the master communication system of the body.
Every movement.
Every heartbeat.
Every digestive process.
Every developmental milestone.
Every sensory experience.
Every immune response.
Every emotional response.
Everything is coordinated through the nervous system.
As chiropractors, our role is to assess for areas of stress and tension that may be interfering with normal communication between the brain and body.
These areas are commonly referred to as subluxations.
A subluxation is not a bone out of place.
A subluxation is an area where the body has adapted to physical, chemical, or emotional stress and altered normal movement, tone, and neurological communication.
In babies, these patterns can begin before birth, during birth, or shortly after birth.
Signs Parents May Notice
Some babies show obvious signs of stress.
Others show none at all.
That is why wellness assessments are so valuable.
Common observations parents may notice include:
- Preferring one side
- Difficulty turning the head
- Flattening of the head
- Tension through the neck
- Difficulty with tummy time
- Challenges latching
- Jaw asymmetry
- Clicking while nursing
- Difficulty settling
- Difficulty sleeping
- Arching backwards
- Feeding on only one side comfortably
Not every baby experiencing these challenges requires chiropractic care.
However, these signs can indicate that a baby’s nervous system and musculoskeletal system deserve a closer look.
Why We Check Healthy Babies
Many parents assume healthcare is only needed when something is wrong.
The reality is that wellness is easier to build than it is to rebuild.
We check healthy babies because development happens rapidly.
During the first year of life:
- The brain doubles in size.
- Neural connections form at astonishing rates.
- Primitive reflexes develop and integrate.
- Motor patterns emerge.
- Sensory pathways organize.
The information entering the nervous system during this period helps shape future development.
When movement is balanced and neurological communication is clear, the brain receives more accurate information about the world.
This allows the baby to adapt more efficiently.
The Importance of Movement
Movement is one of the greatest sources of information for the developing brain.
Every time a baby turns their head, lifts their chest, reaches for a toy, rolls over, crawls, or walks, sensory information floods into the nervous system.
This information helps build:
- Coordination
- Balance
- Body awareness
- Strength
- Posture
- Motor planning
- Adaptability
Restricted movement can limit the quality of information reaching the brain.
That does not mean damage has occurred.
It simply means we want to remove as many barriers to healthy movement as possible.
What Does a Newborn Assessment Look Like?
Parents are often surprised by how gentle pediatric chiropractic assessments are.
A newborn assessment may include evaluation of:
- Head shape
- Neck mobility
- Cranial motion
- Jaw function
- Feeding patterns
- Primitive reflexes
- Spinal movement
- Pelvic balance
- Postural preferences
The assessment is gentle, calm, and adapted specifically for infants.
Most babies remain relaxed throughout the visit.
Many sleep.
Many nurse.
Many simply cuddle in a parent’s arms.
Supporting the Family Unit
One of the most important lessons I have learned over years in practice is that babies do not exist in isolation.
Their nervous systems are constantly interacting with their caregivers.
When parents are exhausted, stressed, overwhelmed, or physically recovering from pregnancy and birth, babies often feel it.
This is why I frequently encourage parents to receive chiropractic care themselves.
A regulated parent supports a regulated child.
A healthier caregiver helps create a healthier environment for growth and development.
It truly takes a village.
What Parents Can Do at Home
Supporting nervous system development is not complicated.
Simple daily habits matter.
Prioritize:
- Skin-to-skin contact
- Tummy time
- Responsive feeding
- Outdoor time
- Carrying and babywearing
- Talking and singing
- Reading together
- Limiting overstimulation
- Adequate sleep
- Healthy parental self-care
These experiences help build strong neurological foundations.
A Different Perspective on Pediatric Care
At One Village Family Chiropractic Community, we do not wait for children to struggle before paying attention to their nervous systems.
We believe in supporting function early.
We believe in assessing wellness, not simply symptoms.
We believe every child deserves the opportunity to develop with the least amount of interference possible.
A chiropractic assessment is not about finding something wrong with your baby.
It is about understanding how their body is adapting to the incredible journey of growth and development.
Because healthy development doesn’t happen by accident.
It happens through thousands of daily experiences that help shape a strong, adaptable, resilient nervous system.
And that journey begins from the very first days of life.
