Summer Is Not a Time to Take a Vacation From Your Health
Building Your Foundation Now for a Stronger Fall
Summer in Edmonton is a funny season.
For about eight months of the year, we dream about it.
We count down the days. We imagine patios, lake trips, camping weekends, golf rounds, river valley walks, vacations, family barbecues, fresh vegetables from local markets, and evenings that seem to last forever.
Then summer arrives.
And somehow we become busier than ever.
The kids are out of school.
Sports tournaments fill every weekend.
Vacations need planning.
Work doesn’t stop.
The yard suddenly requires attention.
Friends want to get together.
The camper needs fixing.
The lake needs visiting.
The barbecue needs lighting.
And before we know it, September arrives and we are wondering where the summer went.
As a chiropractor, I see the same pattern every year.
People put their health on hold for the summer because they are “too busy.”
Then September arrives.
The kids return to school.
Hockey starts.
Basketball starts.
Dance starts.
Business ramps up.
Activities multiply.
Schedules tighten.
Stress increases.
And many people enter the busiest season of the year already exhausted.
Health Is Not Something You Catch Up On
One of the biggest misconceptions about health is that it can be postponed.
We often hear:
“I’ll get back on track in September.”
“I’ll start exercising when summer is over.”
“I’ll focus on myself once the kids are back in school.”
“I’ll get checked when life slows down.”
The challenge is that life rarely slows down.
Health works much more like a savings account than a lottery ticket.
Small deposits made consistently create resilience.
Small withdrawals made consistently create struggle.
Every walk matters.
Every healthy meal matters.
Every good night’s sleep matters.
Every adjustment matters.
Every glass of water matters.
Every moment outside matters.
The body is constantly adapting to the choices we make.
Those adaptations either build capacity or deplete it.
Summer Is Actually the Perfect Time to Build Health
Think about what summer naturally provides:
More sunlight.
More opportunities for movement.
More fresh local produce.
More time outside.
More social connection.
Longer days.
More opportunities for recreation.
These are all factors that help support nervous system function, recovery, resilience, and adaptability.
The body was designed to move.
It was designed to experience natural light.
It was designed to interact with nature.
It was designed to connect with other people.
Summer gives us more opportunities to do all of those things.
Why not take advantage of them?
The Chiropractic Perspective
At One Village Chiropractic, we view health differently than many people expect.
We are not asking:
“What is broken?”
We are asking:
“What is interfering with the body’s ability to function and adapt?”
Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ, muscle, and gland in your body.
Its primary job is helping you adapt to life.
Physical stress.
Mental stress.
Emotional stress.
Chemical stress.
Environmental stress.
The better your nervous system adapts, the better your body functions.
When spinal joints lose healthy movement and function, communication between the brain and body can become less efficient.
As chiropractors, our role is to help restore motion and improve communication between the brain and body.
We don’t create health.
We help remove interference so your body can express health more effectively.
Summer is an excellent time to improve that communication before the demands of fall arrive.
Think of Health Like Training Camp
Professional athletes do not wait until the first game of the season to get in shape.
They prepare beforehand.
Training camp exists for a reason.
You build capacity before you need it.
The same principle applies to life.
Summer is training camp for fall.
The stronger your foundation now:
The better you’ll handle school schedules.
The better you’ll handle sports commitments.
The better you’ll handle work demands.
The better you’ll handle family responsibilities.
The better you’ll handle unexpected stress.
Health is preparation.
Not reaction.
What We Recommend This Summer
Nothing fancy.
Nothing extreme.
Just fundamentals.
Move Every Day
Walk.
Bike.
Hike.
Swim.
Garden.
Play with your kids.
Throw a football.
Paddle a kayak.
Movement is life.
Life is movement.
Eat Real Food
Summer gives us incredible access to fresh foods.
Local vegetables.
Fresh berries.
Quality proteins.
Healthy fats.
Simple meals.
Aim for protein and vegetables at every meal.
Drink water.
Eat foods that grew, walked, swam, or flew whenever possible.
Protect Your Sleep
Late summer nights are wonderful.
But your nervous system still requires recovery.
Sleep is where repair occurs.
Growth occurs.
Adaptation occurs.
Try to maintain reasonable sleep consistency even during vacation season.
Spend Time Outside
Sunlight helps regulate circadian rhythms.
Nature helps calm the nervous system.
Fresh air changes how we think and feel.
Many problems seem smaller after a walk in the river valley.
Stay Consistent With Chiropractic Care
One adjustment does not create lifelong change.
Neither does one workout.
Neither does one healthy meal.
Consistency creates adaptation.
Adaptation creates resilience.
Resilience creates capacity.
Capacity creates health.
The Humorous Truth About September
Every September we hear:
“I don’t know why I’m so tired.”
Meanwhile, their summer looked like this:
Stayed up until midnight.
Lived on campground hot dogs.
Drove thousands of kilometres.
Attended seventeen tournaments.
Skipped exercise.
Skipped sleep.
Skipped water.
Skipped self-care.
Then expected to feel amazing on the first day back.
The body keeps score.
The good news?
It also rewards consistency.
Your Future Self Is Watching
The choices you make in July show up in September.
The choices you make in August show up in October.
The habits you build today become the resilience you rely on tomorrow.
Summer is not a season to abandon your health.
It is one of the best opportunities all year to strengthen it.
So enjoy the lake.
Take the vacation.
Go camping.
Eat the watermelon.
Watch the sunset.
Spend time with people you love.
Laugh more.
Move more.
Get outside.
Stay consistent with your health habits.
And keep building the foundation that allows you to show up fully for your family, your work, your community, and yourself.
Because fall is coming.
And the strongest families are the ones who use summer to prepare for it.
